Benfica B isolated themselves this Sunday in third place in the Segunda Liga after winning (1-0) against Vizela in a match of the third round of the competition, held at Benfica Campus, Seixal.
The only goal of the team coached by Nélson Veríssimo, which recorded its second consecutive victory in the competition, was scored by Diogo Prioste, at 56 minutes, from a penalty, a player who had already scored similarly in the previous round’s victory (2-0) over Torreense.
Despite being more prolific in attempts, the Benfica players were not effective in the finalizing zone, which explains the goalless score at halftime. Right from the opening minute, Gerson Sousa was the first to miss the target, but he was not the only one who was uninspired in this regard.
Hugo Félix (15 minutes) and Varela (18′ and 45’+2) also lacked the accuracy needed to open the scoring. On the Vizela side, which had 61% possession in the match, the best goal opportunity before the break came in stoppage time, from Matías Lacava, who shot wide of the post.
Upon resumption, just after Matías Lacava had missed a glaring opportunity for Vizela at 49 minutes, Benfica B reached 1-0 from a penalty, awarded after VAR analysis. From the penalty spot, Diogo Prioste was the author of the goal that put the eagles ahead on the scoreboard at 56′.
Until the end of the match, Vizela did everything to avoid defeat and came close to succeeding at 90’+6, when Mörschel, who had replaced Rodrigo Ramos at 62′, headed the ball onto the crossbar after a free kick. With the acquisition of three points, the eagles now have six points and climbed to third position, while Vizela, with three points, occupies ninth place.
