Roger Schmidt is no longer the coach of Benfica Lisbon. As the Portuguese record champions announced on Saturday, the contract has been terminated “with immediate effect”. On Friday evening, Benfica, who will face Bayern Munich in the Champions League on November 6th, only managed a 1:1 draw with FC Moreirense in their fourth game of the season.
Schmidt was a candidate for the coaching position at FC Bayern in the summer, but did not give in to the offer after a conversation with club president Rui Costa. However, he was already under criticism at the end of last season after Benfica only finished second in the championship behind local rivals Sporting.
In his first year (2022/2023), the 57-year-old former coach of Bayer Leverkusen had an outstanding first season: Benfica became champions and reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League. In the current season, Benfica has picked up seven points from four league games.
