Mumbai: Famous Bengali singer Sandhya Mukherjee has passed away. He was 90 years old. Bengali music has been around for decades. Sandhya Mukherjee, who was suffering from congenital diseases of old age, was shifted to a private hospital in late January after being confirmed by Kovid.

The cause of death was a heart attack on Tuesday evening, hospital officials said. Born in Kolkata in 1931, Sandhya first sang in Hindi at the age of 17. Theirs was one of the most beautiful voices in playback singing in the 60s and 70s. He has sung over a thousand songs in Bengali and over a dozen in other languages. In 2011, he was honored by the Government of West Bengal with the Banga Vibhushan, the highest civilian award.

In 1970, she won the National Film Award for Best Singer for her film Jay Jayanti. They have been in the news recently for rejecting the Padma award announced by the central government. Her daughter Soumi Sengupta said she was contacted by central government officials about the Padma Shri award but was turned down.

At the age of 90, her daughter told her mother, who had been in the Bengali music industry for decades, that the Padma Shri award was “extremely despicable” and that was why she was being rejected. Do not mix this with politics. They are beyond politics. There are no political reasons behind the rejection. Sen Gupta said he was rejected only because he felt insulted.
