A tragic series of events culminated in the death of a 35-year-old man in Nagpur, India, after he was accused of abetting his wife’s suicide in a case involving alleged dowry harassment. The incident, reported on Saturday, December 28, 2025, has underscored the devastating consequences of this illegal practice and the immense pressure faced by young couples in India.
The victim has been identified as Suraj Shivanna, a resident of BEL Layout in Vidyaranyapura, Bengaluru. His death occurred late Friday night at a hotel on Wardha Road in Nagpur, where he was found hanging from a ceiling fan. Simultaneously, Suraj’s 60-year-old mother, Jayanti Shivanna, was discovered unconscious in the same room after a suicide attempt. She is currently hospitalized and reported to be in stable condition.
Timeline of a Tragedy
The sequence of events began earlier this week in Bengaluru, just one-and-a-half months after Suraj and his wife, Ganavi, were married. On Thursday, Ganavi allegedly attempted suicide at their home in Vidyaranyapura and later died during medical treatment. Following her death, Ganavi’s parents filed a complaint accusing Suraj and his family of dowry harassment, leading to the registration of a case of abetment of suicide against Suraj. A protest was subsequently staged by the woman’s family, demanding swift action.
According to police reports, Suraj and his mother left Bengaluru shortly after the case was filed, reportedly fearing arrest and alleging threats from Ganavi’s relatives. Their journey took them first to Hyderabad before arriving in Nagpur on December 26, where they checked into a hotel. Suraj’s younger brother, Sanjay, accompanied them.
Police Investigation and Response
Hotel staff alerted authorities after discovering the incident. “Suraj Shivanna hanged himself from a ceiling fan in the hotel room,” stated a senior official from the Sonegaon police station. “After learning about her son’s death, his mother, Jayanti, attempted suicide but was saved. She has been admitted to a hospital and is out of danger.”
Suraj’s body has been sent for a post-mortem examination, and police have recorded a statement from his brother, Sanjay. A case of accidental death has been registered, and authorities are coordinating with Bengaluru police regarding the ongoing abetment of suicide case.
“We are conducting inquiries with regard to the matter and further investigation is underway,” the official added.
This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing struggle against dowry harassment in India and the urgent need for greater awareness and support for victims.
