Owners of Mercedes-Benz vehicles have filed a complaint with the Korea Consumer Agency, claiming they were “given incorrect battery manufacturer information.”

According to the automobile industry on the 3rd, the Korea Consumer Agency is currently investigating the facts regarding the damage relief application recently filed by Mercedes-Benz owners. The owners are taking issue with the fact that Mercedes-Benz installed Chinese Farasis batteries in some models of its mid-size electric sedan, the ‘EQE’, while informing consumers that they installed Chinese CATL batteries. While CATL is the world’s No. 1 battery company in terms of market share, Farasis is an unfamiliar company to consumers, ranking in the top 10.

Mercedes-Benz owners claim that they learned that the battery manufacturer was incorrect during the investigation into the Mercedes-Benz electric vehicle fire that occurred in Cheongna, Incheon on the 1st of last month. They cited an interview with a domestic media outlet in 2022 by Christoph Starzynski, Vice President of Mercedes-Benz Electric Vehicle Development, in which he stated that the EQE model would be equipped with battery cells supplied by CATL. Some owners also claim that they were told by dealers that the vehicles were equipped with CATL batteries when they purchased them.

The Korea Consumer Agency will verify the facts, such as whether Benz Korea explicitly guaranteed that the CATL battery was installed, and proceed with the dispute resolution process in the future. Regarding this, Benz Korea stated, “We are working to determine the cause of the fire and are fully cooperating with the authorities.”
