The Origins of the Movement
“The Movimento, as you know – emphasizes Grillo – was born from the idea that Gianroberto and I had to create a different political force, an alternative to traditional parties, now encrusted by decades of zombie politicians, more concerned with their interests than with those of the citizens they should represent. We knew from the beginning that the danger of falling into the same trap looms over every political force, because every representative inevitably tends to put themselves at the center, sacrificing the collective interest. It is a story as old as the world: for centuries communities have struggled to find rules that can curb this drift.” And again: “Gianroberto and I understood that, to create a model different from traditional parties, we had to establish some fundamental, inviolable rules. This is why, when we talk about foundational principles, we are talking about non-negotiable principles, principles that if they are undermined make the foundations of a house that we have built together with you, brick by brick, collapse over all these years.”

The DNA of the 5 Stars
“On August 20 – recalls the founder of the M5s – I published on my blog a post titled ‘Our DNA’ in which I asked for the safeguard of the symbol, the name, and the two-term rule, founding principles of the Movimento 5 Stelle. After the publication of this post, Giuseppe Conte published a launch video of the Constituent Assembly in which he declared that the symbol, the name, and even the rules of the M5S could undergo modifications. Now, I explicitly reiterate what I had already intended to do with that post, unfortunately ignored by President Conte: to exercise the rights that the Statute recognizes to me as Guarantor, that is, the custodian of the fundamental Values of the political action of the Movimento 5 Stelle. And therefore, according to what is stated in article 12, letter a) number 2, I reiterate that there are essential elements of the Movimento 5 Stelle that must remain so for the Movement to still be called such: the name, the symbol, and the two-term rule. Repetita iuvant.” And he concludes with a postscript: “I add that it is true that ‘no one should fear a community that discusses’…but neither should those who decide on blocked lists and deadly hugs without discussing it with the community.”
