Berkshire Medical Center Achieves Top ‘A’ Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group
Berkshire Medical Center (BMC) has once again been recognized for its commitment to patient safety, earning an ‘A’ Hospital Safety Grade for the fall of 2025 from The Leapfrog Group. This marks the second time this year the Pittsfield-based hospital has received the highest rating, demonstrating consistent excellence in preventing medical harm.
A National Benchmark for Hospital Safety
The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade, a program of the independent national nonprofit The Leapfrog Group, assigns letter grades to general hospitals across the United States. These grades—ranging from ‘A’ to ‘F’—are based on over 30 rigorously measured performance indicators related to patient safety, including the incidence of medical errors, accidents, injuries, and infections, as well as the preventative systems hospitals have in place.
BMC’s consistent achievement of an ‘A’ grade underscores its dedication to providing a safe and high-quality care environment. A senior official at BMC stated, “The care and safety of our patients is paramount. This new ‘A’ Hospital Safety Grade reflects the ongoing commitment of our providers and staff to strive for nothing but excellence in serving our Berkshire community.”
The Impact of Preventable Medical Harm
The Leapfrog Group’s program is unique in its exclusive focus on errors that can be avoided through established safety protocols. According to a company release, preventable medical errors, infections, and injuries contribute to the deaths of more than 500 patients each day in the U.S. The program’s methodology is peer-reviewed, transparent, and freely accessible to the public, with grades updated biannually in the fall and spring.
“Achieving an ‘A’ Hospital Safety Grade reflects enormous dedication to patient safety,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “I extend my congratulations to Berkshire Medical Center, its leadership, clinicians, staff, and volunteers for creating a culture where patients come first.”
This latest recognition reinforces Berkshire Medical Center’s position as a leader in patient safety within the region and nationally. The hospital’s continued success highlights the importance of prioritizing preventative measures and fostering a culture of safety among all healthcare professionals.
