More than a hundred firefighters were called on Friday morning to the Radisson Hotel in Berlin following the explosion of a huge aquarium that contained one million liters of water, 16 meters long with 1500 fish, the Berlin fire services said. “The aquarium is damaged, water is leaking. The situation is unclear at the moment,” Berlin forces said on Twitter.

At around 5:45 a.m. local time on Friday, a very loud noise was heard and parts of the front of the hotel where the aquarium is located flew into the street, local media reported. Berlin’s traffic director said that a very large amount of water spilled onto the street, the area was largely closed while the forces worked on the scene.

The Berlin police said that in addition to causing “incredible marine damage”, two people were injured by shards of glass. The explosion caused several windows to break and extensive damage to the hotel. According to the local media, the explosion was due to wear and tear that was not treated, the aquarium was recently treated in 2020.
