According to the insurance company, the number of car thefts in Germany rose by almost 20 percent last year – the risk is highest in Berlin. The General Association of the German Insurance Industry announced that 14,585 cars with comprehensive insurance were stolen nationwide. “The total economic damage caused by car thefts grew to more than 310 million euros.”

When comparing federal states and major cities in Germany, the risk of burglary is greatest in Berlin. “Berlin is the capital of car thieves; in purely mathematical terms, a car disappears here every two hours,” said the group’s general director, Jörg Asmussen, according to the statement. “Almost every third carjacking in the entire country now takes place in Berlin.”

Few cases in southern Germany

In 2023, 4,266 fully insured cars were stolen in the capital, a good 46 percent more than the previous year. For comparison: 853 cars were stolen in Hamburg, 2915 in North Rhine-Westphalia and 181 in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania according to the statement, 596 cars were in Bavaria and 574 in Baden-Württemberg southern Germany. However, the numbers there are also increasing.

According to the group, the damage is increased for those involved. “On average, insurers pay almost 21,400 euros for each theft, around six percent more than the previous year,” said Asmussen. According to the statement, expensive SUVs are popular among thieves.

The number of car thefts has already increased in 2022 – after a decrease during the corona pandemic.
