About 680 cases related to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict are being considered by the Berlin prosecutor’s office after the escalation of the situation in the Middle East. This was reported by the DPA agency with reference to a representative of the prosecutor’s office, Day.Az reports with reference to TASS.
Of these, about 130 cases related to crimes committed during demonstrations over the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. The names of the accused are known in 209 cases. Prosecutors brought charges eight times. In 16 cases, a conviction must be made on the basis of a sentencing order, that is, without an oral hearing in court.
According to the prosecutor’s office, the sentence of a 25-year-old young man who took part in riots during a demonstration in October 2023 has entered into force. Last November, the Tiergarten district court sentenced him to eight months’ probation for serious breach of public order. It was the first trial in Berlin since protesters clashed with police during protests related to conflict in the Middle East.
Since the Palestinian Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, numerous rallies and demonstrations, especially by pro-Palestinian activists, have taken place in Berlin on an almost regular basis. There were repeated clashes with police and even acts of violence, especially in the first few weeks after the Hamas attack. On November 2, German Interior Minister Nancy Feser announced that the ban on Hamas activities in the country, which had previously been announced by Chancellor Olaf Scholz, came into force. On October 8, Scholz said that Israeli government facilities and Jewish cultural and religious institutions would be more carefully guarded in Germany.
