Berlin, Germany: New bathing rules will allow everyone to swim in public swimming pools without covering their upper body. This follows a complaint of discrimination filed by a woman who was not allowed to swim bare-chested in a swimming pool in the capital.

The woman, whose identity has not been revealed, appealed to the Senate Ombudsman’s office claiming that “it is time to give equal treatment to women, who, like men, can swim topless,” as published by the Berlin Senate for Justice and Anti-Discrimination. In response to the complaint and involvement The ombudsman in the case, Berliner Baderbatria, the manager of the city’s public pools, decided to change the bathing rules.

In the past, women who exposed their breasts in public pools in Berlin were asked to cover up or leave the pool, and sometimes were even forbidden to return. “Now, it is important that the regulation be implemented and that women are no longer deported or banned from walking bare-chested,” Liebshar concluded.
