Two weeks before the first round of the presidential elections, the ex-prime minister, leader of the Forward, Italy! and one of the main contenders for the presidency Silvio Berlusconi issued an ultimatum.
Cavaliere vowed to withdraw his party from the government coalition if incumbent Prime Minister Mario Draghi is elected President of Italy. Berlusconi’s statement came at the very moment when political forces are trying to determine their candidates.
The main contenders at the moment are 85-year-old Berlusconi and 74-year-old Draghi. For them, according to recent polls, 39 and 50 percent of Italians are ready to vote, respectively. At the same time, there are observers who do not exclude that, since presidential elections are often unpredictable, a woman may become the country’s new president for the first time.
Recall that a secret ballot with the participation of more than 1,000 parliamentarians and regional representatives will begin on January 24. In the first three rounds of voting, two-thirds of the votes are required to be elected. And to win in the fourth and subsequent rounds, it is enough to gain 50 percent and one vote.
