Finally Matteo Berrettini! While the Masters 1000 in Indian Wells is underway, the Roman tennis player will return to the court after almost 7 months of stopping due to injury on the courts of Phoenix where a Challenger 175 will take place from 11 to 17 March. After obtaining a wild card to directly access the main draw, Matteo will make his debut against the Frenchman Hugo Gaston, number 85, who he has never faced in his career. Whoever passes will meet the winner of the match between Cazaux and a qualified player in the round of 16. There is also another Italian in the draw, namely Fabio Fognini, who was drawn in the first round against the American Michael Mmoh, world no. 105 (Fognini won the only previous match at the 2018 US Open).
Berrettini, now number 154 in the world, will participate for the third time in the tournament he won in 2019. The Italian has not taken the field since the last US Open, since his withdrawal on 31 August 2023 due to a fall during the second round match against the Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech.
