December is a month for reflection, year-end lists, and, of course, spirited debate – especially in the world of sports. Recently, I participated in three such votes: “Sportsman of the Year in Germany,” “Sportsman of the Year in Schleswig-Holstein,” and a lively online discussion to determine the “Best Athlete of All Time.”
From Michael Jordan to Tiger Woods
Choosing an all-time great is never easy. The contenders are legendary: boxing icon Muhammad Ali, basketball superstar Michael Jordan, tennis champion Serena Williams, football icon Lionel Messi, golf titan Tiger Woods, and sprinting phenomenon Usain Bolt. It’s a remarkably difficult decision.
Naturally, my perspective was colored by a fondness for German and Schleswig-Holstein athletes. I ranked tennis idol Steffi Graf, Formula 1 legend Michael Schumacher, and football emperor Franz Beckenbauer highly. However, my personal choice was Dirk Nowitzki. A phenomenal basketball player and, more importantly, a truly exceptional person. In my view, “Dirkules” was exceptionally deserving of the honor. Ultimately, though, the contest likely came down to Ali or Jordan, given their profound impact on their respective sports and beyond.
The professionals let the arrows fly – and we put our feet up
Unless, of course, a certain “would-be golfer” from the USA decides to throw his hat into the ring. While his athletic prowess on the golf course may be debatable, one shouldn’t underestimate the influence of connections. His close friend, the powerful FIFA boss Gianni Infantino, might just find a way to secure him a place on that throne, especially after winning the FIFA Peace Prize.
