Lorazepam is a tranquilizer-anxiolytic that is used to treat anxiety, in surgical procedures and for sleep disorders and that is complemented with antidepressant therapy and can be combined with antidepressant medications and other psychotropic drugs.
It belongs to the family of benzodiazepines, one of the most abundant and varied groups of drugs on the market that are used for some psychological disorders or problems, although it is not recommended in some cases: if you suffer from liver problems, or respiratory disorders , such as sleep apnea or insufficiency.
Despite the frequency with which it is used, it has different adverse effects that must be taken into account before consuming it. That is why it is recommended that its consumption be only under medical prescription, checking that the recommended amounts and the duration of the treatment are not exceeded. Alcohol also increases the sedative effect of this medication, so it is recommended to avoid the consumption of alcoholic beverages.
But even following the guidelines, you have to know the side effects of this type of medication:
Thrombocytopenia (decrease in blood platelets), agranulocytosis (decrease in neutrophils, a type of white blood cell) and pancytopenia (significant decrease in all blood cells), with unspecified frequency.
It is frequent that it produces confusion, depression, unmasking of depression; infrequent changes in sexual appetite and decreased orgasms; and with unknown frequency Disinhibition, euphoria, suicidal ideas and attempts, paradoxical reactions such as anxiety, agitation, excitement, hostility, aggressiveness, rage, sleep disturbances/insomnia, sexual desire and hallucinations.
Quite often a feeling of suffocation can occur; often ataxia (motor incoordination and speech problems) and dizziness; and with unknown frequency extrapyramidal symptoms: tremor, dysarthria (difficulty articulating words), headache, seizures; amnesia, coma, disturbances in attention/concentration, balance disorder.
Respiratory failure, apnea, worsening of sleep apnea. Worsening of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
Angioedema (swelling under the skin of the tongue, glottis or larynx which can lead to blockage of the airways which can be fatal), allergic skin reactions, alopecia (hair loss).
It can also increase bilirubin, transaminases, and alkaline phosphatase (liver enzymes).
Withdrawal of the product may cause the reappearance of certain symptoms as a consequence of the development of dependency.
