The iPhone is so popular that the smartphone is a prime target for hackers. A new type of attack targets users “smishing” which allows attackers to steal their Apple IDs.
A new kind of attack “smishing”
Broadcom reported this threat which is, at present, limited to the United States. Attackers send fraudulent text messages that ask recipients to sign into iCloud to continue using Apple services. But it is a copy of the official site and when the user logs in, hackers steal their credentials. The crooks then have access to sensitive data such as banking passwords.
Apple is aware of the problem since its support site shows some recommendations regarding this new malicious campaign. The California company cites social engineering scams, such as fraudulent SMS and calls pretending to be its support. The Cupertino company recommends not sharing personal information.
Apple communicates officially about this attack
There is nothing exceptional about hackers conducting a type attack “smishing”. What is a little more clear is that the Cupertino company is communicating officially on this matter. In recent months, computer attacks and other scams have been on the rise. Fraudulent and malicious calls are on the rise and nothing seems to stop them.
Apple uses this release to provide basic advice, such as looking up the sender’s email address. Also beware of the url, there is only one address for iCloud: icloud.com. Never forget that vigilance and a strong password with double authentication is the best solution to protect yourself from attacks.
