While CNews took the lead in audience for the first time in May 2024 – but not in the number of viewers… 12,500/day for BFM and 8,500/day for CNews – BFMTV stirred up the television market on Monday, July 22. In parallel to a surprising double recruitment at the competition, channel 15 of TNT has lost two of its iconic figures.

Hervé Béroud and Marc-Olivier Fogiel leave BFMTV

Like Hervé Béroud, deputy managing director of Altice Media in charge of information, Marc-Olivier Fogiel has decided to leave the channel that was recently bought by Rodolphe Saadé, head of the shipping company CMA-CGM. After five years of good and loyal service, the former host of On ne peut pas plaire à tout le monde has chosen to embark on a new professional adventure that has not yet been specified.

In a letter addressed to the employees of BFMTV, he expressed that he leaves with a sense of work accomplished. “My role was that of a shield protecting you from pressures, attacks, and guaranteeing your freedom. I fought tirelessly for your means so that you could work under the best possible conditions,” he wrote while recalling that he invented and developed new formats such as Face à BFM, La France dans les yeux, 2050 : ouvrons les yeux, and Le forum BFM.

“When I arrived in 2019, BFMTV’s audience share was at 2.6%. It is now at 3%. Against competitors who have significantly strengthened, BFMTV remains the number one channel in France”, Marc-Olivier Fogiel expressed with satisfaction. He will oversee the return of channel 15 of TNT before handing over to Fabien Namias, who was recruited from LCI. Jean-Philippe Baille will leave the direction of information at Radio France to succeed Hervé Béroud.

Two new programs on BFMTV at the start of the school year

In the weeks leading up to the announcement of his departure from the direction of the channel where Benjamin Duhamel completely destabilized Mathilde Panot, Marc-Olivier Fogiel orchestrated the arrival of recruits. Starting Monday, August 26, BFMTV will launch a new daily program. This program, entitled Liberté, Egalité, Brunet, will be led by Eric Brunet, recruited from LCI, and Alice Darfeuille, every evening between 8 PM and 10 PM.

Yves Thréard will also sign his arrival on channel 15 of TNT. As announced by TV Mag, the deputy director of Le Figaro, regularly present on LCI sets, will head a weekly program that will be broadcast every Friday between 7 PM and 8:30 PM. This program will aim to focus on national and international political news and will also feature a panel of commentators.

Through these two recruitments, Marc-Olivier Fogiel has sought to enable BFMTV to counter the offensive of CNews. In the slots that Eric Brunet and Yves Thréard will occupy from the start of the school year, the continuous news channel of the Canal+ group has durably established itself at the top of the audiences thanks to respectively L’heure des pros 2 and Face à Philippe de Villiers, programs orchestrated by Pascal Praud and Eliot Deval. It remains to be seen whether the two new programs on channel 15 of TNT will succeed in reversing this trend…

Television News Landscape: Shifts and Strategies in the Age of Competition

The recent resignation of prominent figures at BFMTV, including Hervé Béroud and Marc-Olivier Fogiel, highlights a significant transition in the French news broadcasting landscape. As competition intensifies, particularly from channels like CNews, the strategies employed by these networks will become crucial in shaping their futures.

BFMTV’s audience share has seen a modest increase, coming from 2.6% to 3% since 2019. However, with CNews recently taking the lead in audience numbers—albeit with fewer daily viewers—BFMTV must adapt to retain its position as the leading news channel in France. The ongoing battle for viewers reflects broader trends in media consumption, where traditional TV news must now contend with the immediacy and accessibility of digital news platforms.

The announcement of new shows, such as Liberté, Egalité, Brunet, and a weekly political program starring Yves Thréard, signals BFMTV’s proactive approach to regain viewer engagement. The focus on distinctive programming and veteran talent demonstrates an intent to innovate in response to competitive pressures. The effectiveness of these shows will likely play a pivotal role in determining BFMTV’s ability to capture audience attention and sustain viewer loyalty moving forward.

As networks continue to adapt, we may observe a further blending of entertainment and news formats. The emergence of mission-driven journalistic projects might also rise in prominence, appealing to viewers seeking high-quality content that informs while engaging. With viewers demanding more transparency and relevance, the future will likely require news channels to rethink their content strategies significantly, ensuring they resonate with contemporary audiences amidst a saturated market.

The evolving dynamics between major players like BFMTV and CNews will not only dictate their respective futures but also shape the broader narrative of television news in France. As they struggle for dominance, the ultimate winner will be the viewer, who stands to gain from enhanced diversity and quality in news storytelling.
