Tiruvarur District Championship Chess Tournament was held at Bhuvanur Chaturanga Vallabanathar Temple near Needamangalam.

This temple has a history of Lord Shiva playing chess with Rajarajeshwari, the daughter of Tirunelveli King Vasusena and winning and marrying Rajarajeshwari. The 25th Tiruvarur District Championship Chess Tournament for South Parai R. Krishnasamy Memorial Cup was held on Saturday in this temple.

250 chess players from 7 districts of Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Mayiladuthurai, Ariyalur, Salem and Trichy participated and played in this competition.

Competitions were held in five categories namely 9, 11, 13, 15 years and general category. Mannargudi Midtown Rotary Association President Rengaian presided over the opening ceremony of the competitions. Temple Administrative Officer Prabhakaran, Neelan Matriculation High School Secretary A. Suren, Union Committee Member Bharathimohan and Panchayat Council President Mohan took the lead.

Prizes were given to the winning students. Charity Joint Commissioner Ramu, Tiruvarur District Chess Club President N. Santhakumar, Vice Presidents Balan, Muralitharan, Secretary Balagunasekaran, Joint Secretary Saravanan and others were present.

The winners of the general category will participate in the state championship chess tournament to be held at Pudukottai from October 14 to 19 and the winners of the under-13 category will participate in the state level tournament to be held at Erode from October 31 to October 4.
