In response to today’s move to the controversial Bibby Stockholm Of the first batch of asylum seekers, Steve Valdez-Symonds, Director of Refugee and Migrant Rights at Amnesty International UK, said:

“It seems like there is nothing the government is not willing to do to make asylum seekers feel unwelcome and unsafe in this country.”

He Bibby Stockholmreminiscent of Victorian-era prison ships, is an absolutely shameful way to take in people who have fled terror, conflict and persecution.”

“Housing people on a barge is probably a re-traumatizer, and there should be serious concern about confining each person to a space equivalent to a standard parking space.”

“After such outrageous breaches and clear warnings about the public health danger of using disused military barracks, it is totally inappropriate for the government to continue its appalling practice of treating people as if they were objects to be stored.”

“The British Home Secretary can continue to squander public money to avoid doing her job, but it will do her no good. Rather than tear up the asylum system, the government should fairly and efficiently determine asylum claims, rather than perpetuate a costly backlog, human misery, and exploitation by organized criminal gangs.”
