The Battle of Ibarra is a historical event of great importance, not only because it was the only war that was personally led by the Liberator Simón Bolívar in the current Ecuadorian territory, but also because it was the last armed action of independence that was carried out on homeland. That is why the bicentennial celebration of the battle of July 17, 2013, has national and international significance.

Bolívar’s triumph sealed the independence not only of what is now Ecuador, but also of all of Greater Colombia, that is, the New Granada of that time, and of Venezuela, also allowing efforts to be concentrated on the liberation of Peru and present-day Bolivia.

With this opportunity several acts are being carried out. Among them, the Municipality of Ibarra and the Imbabura Corporation, under the auspices of the Colegio de América Latinoamericana Headquarters and the Universidad Andina Simón Bolívar Headquarters Ecuador, organized the international seminar: “The Battle of Ibarra and its international projection”, which was held on Wednesday, July 12, 2023. This event has been the academic framework of the celebration, with the presence of international speakers of recognized trajectory.

In that act, the book by Cristóbal de Gangotena y Jijón was presented: “Documents referring to the battle of Ibarra”. This work contains the text that narrates the royalist insurrection in Pasto led by Agustín Agualongo, whose decisive moment was his defeat in Ibarra by Bolívar’s army. It also contains the documents referring to the Battle of Ibarra, which give an account of its background, development and consequences. Includes the biography of General Salom.

The academic significance of the work is unquestionable, not only for the historical work, but also for the selection of documents. After a hundred years of being published for the first time, it retains its value. It is a great contribution to the identity of Ibarra and to the knowledge of his role in the independence and trajectory of Ecuador and the Andean region.
