Thiruvananthapuram: Lyricist Bichu Thirumala (B. Sivasankaran Nair – 80), who composed many memorable songs for Malayalam film song lovers, has passed away. He died at a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram this morning.

He has written lyrics for hundreds of film songs which are considered to be the best in Malayalam. He wrote over 5,000 songs for over 400 films and cassettes. In a short period of time, he was adept at composing poetic compositions to suit the story context of the film. His wife is Prasanna Kumari, a retired Water Authority employee. Son Suman Shankar Bichu (music director).

He won the State Film Award for Best Lyricist twice – in 1981 (Trishna, – ‘Shruthiyil Ninnayarum …’, Thenum Vayampum – ‘Ottakambi Nadam Matram Moolum …’), and 1991 (Kadinjul Kalyanam – ‘Before Pulari Viriyum Mumbe …’ ‘). ‘A silent journey from mind to mind …’). He is also the recipient of the Sukumar Azhikode Tatvamasi Award, the Kerala Film Critics Association’s Chalachithraratnam Award and the Swathi-P Bhaskaran Lyricist Award.

Bichu Thirumala alias B. Sivasankaran Nair was born on February 13, 1942 in Cherthala Ayyanattu House, the eldest son of CG Bhaskaran Nair and Parukutty. Bichu is the nickname given to Gopal Pillai by his grandfather, who was also a well-known scholar. After moving to Thirumala, Thiruvananthapuram, he became Bichu Thirumala. Singer Sushila Devi, Vijayakumar, Dr. Chandra, Syama and Darshan Raman are brothers.

Bichu Thirumala’s poetic career began when she wrote poems for her sister’s singer to compete. In 1962, he wrote and acted in the play ‘Ballatha Duniyav’ at the Inter-University Radio Drama Competition and won first place nationally. After graduating from the University College, Thiruvananthapuram with a degree in Economics, he came to Chennai with a passion for film directing. After a long period of suffering, the director M. I got the opportunity to work as Krishnan Nair’s assistant. He became an assistant director in the film ‘Sabarimala Sridharmasasthav’. At that time, Bichu wrote a weekly poem and used it for the film ‘Bhajagovindam’. Though the film was not released, the song that starts with ‘Pranam Sakhi Nee Pallavi Padiya Neram …’ in Brahmamuhurtha was very popular.

The movie ‘Akkaldama’ directed by actor Madhu was first released with songs written by Bichu Thirumala. The song ‘Neelakasavum Meghangalum …’ sung by Brahmanandan with music by Shyam was very popular in this film. He wrote most of the songs for music director Shyam. He has done many songs with many composers like Ilayaraja, AT Ummer, Jerry Amaldev, Dakshinamoorthy, Devarajan Master, Raveendran and Ouseppachan. Bichu also wrote the lyrics for AR Rahman’s only Malayalam film ‘Yodha’. All the three songs in ‘Yodha’ became super hits like ‘Padakali Chandi Chankari Porkali …’, ‘Kunukune Cheru Kurunirakal …’ and ‘Mampoove Manju Thirunno …’.

The lines that hid the trick of ‘Grandma said potato on the vegetable tray …’ are nobody else’s. ‘Aalorungi Arangorungi ….’, ‘Chinnakutty Chellakutty Thankakatty ….’, ‘Thathappenne Thanchathil Vaa ….’, ‘Katturumpe Vayadi Neyyurumpe ….’, ‘Ettappam Chudanam Chuttappam Varanam ….’, ‘Cheppadikkaranalla allalla ….’, ‘Kakka Poocha Kokkarakozhi Va Ottakam Ana Maine ….’ These are some of the bitch’s numbered children’s songs.
