Bidasoa Irun lost to bottom club Aguas Santas Milaneza and postponed their qualification for the next round of the European League

Bidasoa Irun missed the opportunity on Tuesday to practically seal the pass to the round of 16 of the European League with their defeat on the track of Aguas Santas Milaneza, which to date had one point out of twelve possible. The Portuguese team goes from being a clear red lantern to having options to qualify thanks to the 28-25 victory.

Despite the defeat, with three games to go, the Irundarras still have a four-point advantage over their executioner yesterday (plus the private average, in Irun a 35-26 was recorded) and against Motor Zaporozhye, whom they should visit on the 21st February. The fight to advance to the next round of the second European competition is now a matter of four for two places, since the first two have a mathematical owner, Fuchse Berlin and Skanderborg Aarhus. The two will soon pass through Artaleku.

The results of the other two group D matches, which began two hours earlier, confirmed that a yellow victory would win the round of 16, but Cuétara’s team went from more to less, exactly the opposite of what he did last Friday against Benidorm.

A 0-2 start helped the Gipuzkoans to dominate almost the entire first half. After the tie at three, Aguas Santas went seven minutes without scoring and two goals from Cavero and one from Gorka Nieto put the score at 3-6, with maximum income that was repeated at 4-7. There came the response from the Portuguese team, with an identical 3-0 run. In those moments most of the local goals came from the pivot, also some penalty caused.

A match with thirteen draws

Equality was the predominant tone of a match in which Pedro Pacehco made his debut as a Bidasotarra in European competition. His only goal (from two shots) made it 9-11 but a new 3-0 run came that meant the first Portuguese lead of the game, 12-11. The break was reached with a draw, at 14, a situation that had occurred another seven times in the first half hour and that was going to occur five more times in the second.

The restart was quite similar to what was seen before the break. Start with 1-3 and advantages in favor of Artaleku’s team, although now only one goal, except for 15-17.

Mitic scored three almost consecutive goals until 20-21 and then, at 21-21, Carvalho stopped a penalty from Azkue, as he had done to Cavero in the first half. The Portuguese goalkeeper made sixteen saves, ten more than the Irundarra couple.

Eleven minutes from the end, the last tie was registered, at 22, which gave rise to the escape of Aguas Santas until 25-22 and 27-24. The yellow box still had options, but being on the wire you cannot make any mistakes and they continued to accumulate. In separate counterattacks that could give hope, Salinas and Zabala crashed their shots into the posts and the clock ended up passing its sentence, despite trying in every way.

Friday in Cangas

Bidasoa slept in Portugal and today they will complete 170 kilometers by road to Cangas de Morrazo, where they will play a league game on Friday at 9:30 p.m.
