/ US President Joe Biden accused Iraqi factions on Sunday of carrying out the attack on US forces in Jordan, which resulted in the killing and wounding of 28 soldiers.
Biden confirmed in a statement that the attack on US forces in Jordan “was carried out by Iranian-backed militant groups operating in Syria and Iraq.”
In his statement, the president expressed his sorrow for the loss of these warriors “in this despicable attack.”
“The three American service members we lost were true patriots. Our nation will never forget their ultimate sacrifice. Together, we will uphold the sacred commitment we have to their families. We will strive to be worthy of their honor and courage. We will continue their commitment to the fight against terrorism. We have no doubt that we will hold all those responsible accountable at the time and in the manner of our choosing.”
Three American soldiers were killed and at least 25 service members were wounded in an overnight drone attack on a small American outpost in Jordan, US officials told CNN, marking the first time American troops have been killed by hostile fire in the Middle East since the start of the Gaza war.
The American network reported that the killing of three Americans in Tower 22 in Jordan near the border with Syria constitutes a major escalation of the already dangerous situation in the Middle East.
Three service members were killed and 25 others wounded in a one-way drone attack “targeting a base in northeastern Jordan,” US Central Command confirmed in a statement on Sunday.
As of Friday, there had been more than 158 attacks on U.S. and coalition forces in Iraq and Syria, though officials have described the steady barrage of drones, rockets and missiles as unsuccessful because they often did not cause serious casualties or damage to infrastructure.
