In the United States, the Washington administration announces the extension until June 2023 of a moratorium on student debt. And according to the Ministry of Education, this moratorium could potentially last until the end of August.

In the United States, a university education can be very expensive. Students come out with a diploma, but also very often with a heavy debt of up to tens of thousands of dollars.

At the end of August, the American president promised to erase up to 20,000 dollars of the sums borrowed per person. Twenty-six million students or former students are affected by this promise. Announced shortly before the midterm elections, the measure which could cost 400 billion dollars was immediately challenged by the American right in court. The federal government appealed to the Supreme Court.

To this expected cancellation of the debt is added the freeze on the repayment of loans decided during the Covid-19 pandemic and which was to end at the end of the year. Result: some students should have resumed their payments in January. With this moratorium extended until the summer, they feel relieved.

Today, student debt in the United States is $1.6 trillion, according to the White House.
