The White House said on Saturday that US President Joe Biden discussed in a call with Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad the urgent need to reach a ceasefire agreement in Gaza.

The White House said in a statement that Biden and the Emir of Qatar discussed the need to reach an agreement that includes providing life-saving relief to civilians in Gaza, and discussed the ceasefire negotiations in Cairo and efforts to remove any remaining obstacles.

The White House noted that Biden thanked the Emir of Qatar for his leadership and they agreed to close and direct coordination in the coming days.

Biden had a similar call with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, “in which he stressed that the agreement in Gaza is of utmost importance at this time for two reasons: ending the suffering in the Gaza Strip and preventing the expansion of the conflict in the region.”

Ambassador Ahmed Fahmy, the official spokesman for the Egyptian presidency, said, “The call reviewed the latest developments in the negotiation round currently hosted by Cairo, as the two presidents stressed the importance of the concerned parties’ commitment to overcoming obstacles and showing flexibility to complete the agreement.”

The death toll from the ongoing Israeli war on the Gaza Strip since October 7, 2023, has risen to 40,265 dead and 93,144 wounded.
