U.S. President Joe Biden said on the 11th (local time), “Any attack on Philippine aircraft, ships, or troops in the South China Sea will trigger the Mutual Defense Treaty between the United States and the Philippines.” China, which is involved in a territorial dispute in the South China Sea with the Philippines, has sent a strong warning to China amid continued clashes, including firing water cannons at Philippine ships.
President Biden held a meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. at the White House on this day and said, “We have opened a new era of trilateral partnership.” This is the first time that the United States, Japan, and the Philippines have held a trilateral summit.
President Marcos emphasized, “Today’s historic summit is the culmination of the tripartite agreement, but it is only the beginning,” adding, “To face complex challenges, we need a firm commitment to the rules-based international order.” Prime Minister Kishida said, “I hope to further strengthen cooperation between the three countries to ensure peace and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region.”
With the launch of the US-Japan-Philippines trilateral summit, the US has established a new multilateral security cooperation body in the so-called ‘lattice’ security structure that will further tighten the blockade of China. Following the Quad, a security alliance involving the United States, Japan, India, and Australia, and the AUKUS, a security alliance of the United States, the United Kingdom, and Japan, and the trilateral cooperation between Korea, the United States, and Japan, and the new trilateral cooperation between the United States, Japan, and the Philippines, the Pacific and Northeast A multilateral cooperation body was completed along the blockade line against China that connects Asia, Southeast Asia, and South Asia.
In the ‘Joint Vision Statement’ released after the summit, the leaders of the US, Japan and the Philippines said, “We express serious concerns about China’s dangerous and aggressive actions in the South China Sea,” and added, “We believe that Coast Guard and Maritime Militia vessels are at risk in the South China Sea. “We firmly oppose any coercive activities,” he said.
He continued, “We will advance trilateral defense cooperation, including joint training and exercises.” Accordingly, the three countries decided to conduct trilateral maritime exercises between maritime security authorities next year and begin trilateral maritime consultations to promote maritime cooperation.
The three countries also announced that they will launch the ‘Global Partnership for Infrastructure (PGI) Luzon Corridor’ to promote investment in major infrastructure such as ports, railways, clean energy, and semiconductor supply chains connecting Subic Bay, Clark, Manila, and Batangas in the Philippines. . It promised large-scale infrastructure investment in the Philippines through PGI, which was launched to check China’s One Belt One Road initiative. Subic Bay and Clark are where US military bases were located and are considered key points in the defense of the South China Sea.
