Biden calls for a ban on assault weapons in the United States

The president of the USA, Joe Bidenhas called this Monday to ban the assault weapons that are frequently used in mass shootings like the one in Texas two months ago that killed 21 people. “I am determined to ban these weapons again (…) I am not going to stop until we do it,” he explained at an event at the White House on the occasion of the approval of the first major federal gun safety law in three decades in which he has lamented that the country is “flooded with weapons of war”.

Congress has shown little inclination to ban assault weapons after a ban on such weapons expired in 2004, but Biden hopes to use growing American outrage over mass shootings to put more pressure on lawmakers to change their minds. “Assault weapons must be banned,” she stressed.

The Democratic president has also called on lawmakers to push for secure storage laws that require personal liability “for not locking up the gun.” Biden has assured that he supports the Second Amendment of the Constitution of USA that gives Americans the right to own firearms, but said “the right to bear arms is not an absolute right that dominates all others.”

Accompanied by the Vice President Kamala HarrisBiden spoke at an event on the South Lawn of the White House to commemorate the recent passage of the bipartisan Gun Safety Bill, the first such new gun law in 30 years.

Criticism of Biden

In the audience were many of the members of Congress who passed the legislation and family members of some of the people who have died in mass shootings, such as the recent attacks in Uvalde, Texas, Buffalo, New York, and Highland Park, Illinois. The father of a minor killed in one of those killings interrupted the president to criticize that the agreement reached between Democrats and Republicans is not enough. “Sit down. You will listen to what I have to say,” Biden replied.

The new law includes provisions to help states keep guns out of the hands of those who are considered a danger to themselves or others. It also blocks gun sales to those convicted of abusing their unmarried intimate partners and cracks down on gun sales to buyers convicted of domestic violence.
