US President Joe Biden supported the Nobel Committee in awarding the Peace Prize to journalists. He congratulated the laureates – Novaya Gazeta editor-in-chief Dmitry Muratov and Filipino journalist Maria Ressa.
“I congratulate Maria Ressa from the Philippines and Dmitry Muratov from Russia on the well-deserved honor of being named this year’s Nobel Peace Prize laureates. Like many journalists around the world, Ressa and Muratov tirelessly and fearlessly follow the facts, ”said Mr Biden in a statement.
The US President noted that the laureates worked on the topic of abuse of power, exposed corruption and demanded transparency. “For their adherence to the basic principles of a free press … they face constant threats, harassment and intimidation, lawsuits and even, in Muratov’s case, the death of their colleagues,” the US president added.
Mr. Muratov received the Nobel Peace Prize “for his efforts to defend freedom of expression, which is a prerequisite for democracy and lasting peace.” He became the third Russian citizen to receive this award.
