It has been revealed that top-level figures within the party are urging President Joe Biden, who is being asked to step down as the Democratic presidential candidate after his crushing defeat in the TV debate on the 27th of last month (local time), to resign. Amid growing pressure to resign, President Biden canceled major schedules on the 17th after being infected with the novel coronavirus (COVID-19). It seems that the controversy over cognitive decline could spread to concerns about physical health.
According to ABC News on that day, Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer met with President Biden last weekend and advised him, “It would be better to withdraw from the primary.” House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries also recently conveyed his intention that “(Biden’s) push to run could threaten the Democratic Party’s hopes,” the Washington Post reported. CNN reported that “Former House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi also said in a private conversation with President Biden, ‘You can’t beat Trump.’” Former and current leaders within the party have all sent messages of opposition to his running for president.
Public calls for resignation continued. Rep. Adam Schiff, a close associate of former Speaker Pelosi, issued a statement saying, “The decision is up to the president, but I believe it is time to pass the torch to the next candidate.” This brings the total number of Democratic lawmakers who have publicly called for resignation to 20.
President Biden still maintains his stance of “no resignation,” but some analysts say he is more receptive to resignation. President Biden plans to stay at his Delaware home for the time being to receive treatment for COVID-19. He also canceled his speech at a Latino rights advocacy event scheduled for that day in Las Vegas, Nevada. Local media outlets acknowledged that COVID-19 is an infectious disease, but said, “He cannot help but be compared to Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, who went through his scheduled schedule despite being shot.”
