There was an embarrassing incident at the NATO summit in Washington when US President Joe Biden mistakenly called Vladimir Putin the president of Ukraine, Ukrainian media reported.
Biden made this slip of the tongue when he handed over the floor to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
During his speech, Biden said: “And now I want to turn the floor over to the president of Ukraine, who has not only courage, but determination. Ladies and gentlemen, President Putin.”
After applause from the audience, realizing his mistake, Biden tried to correct himself: “President Putin… He will defeat President Putin. President Zelensky! I am so focused on defeating Putin that we have to worry about that.”
The incident comes amid speculation about Biden’s ability to remain the Democratic nominee in the upcoming presidential election. Some of his advisers, according to the New York Times, believe Biden should not run for a second term. Two of them even say the president needs to make sure he can’t beat Donald Trump in the election. However, the White House has denied these claims.
At the final declaration of the NATO summit, the alliance’s member states pledged to provide Ukraine with 40 billion euros in 2025 and reaffirmed their support for Ukraine on its path to full Euro-Atlantic integration, including NATO membership. The document states that Ukraine will receive an invitation to join the alliance when the allies agree and all necessary conditions are met.
Let us recall that the press secretary of the Russian president, Dmitry Peskov, commented on the results of the summit, stating that they “quite clearly” confirmed the confrontational nature of NATO.
