Changes in US immigration policy continue to surprise. Now, after the announcement that immigrants who cross the border illegally will not be granted asylum, Joe Biden’s administration is preparing more measures that should be announced soon.

According to several sources familiar with the matter, the White House is considering a proposal that could give the opportunity to legalize status to thousands of people who are currently undocumented in the United States.

CBS News reported that there are now five sources indicating the existence of such an initiative, which would only have two precedents, the so-called Cuban Adjustment Act and humanitarian parole.

The new guidelines would in fact resemble humanitarian parole, with the White House granting work permits and protection from deportation to certain unauthorized immigrants through immigration parole authority.

The requirement is that these people have spouses who are US citizens.

This policy is known as parole in place and, in short, allows beneficiaries to overcome the obstacles of US legislation by being able to opt for permanent residence in the US.

According to CBS News, it could even guarantee them citizenship, but the network itself explains that the final details of the administration’s proposal have not been approved, and are still under review.

In addition, it was learned that the initiative would specifically benefit undocumented immigrants who have been living in the United States for years, and not newcomers.

It is estimated that there are more than one million unauthorized immigrants living in the United States who have U.S. citizen spouses, and many of them could benefit from such a law.

This measure could be part of a series of government decisions to shape a more organized immigration policy that would allow for the regularization of thousands of migrants more effectively, while expelling thousands more quickly and without processes that take years.

In this regard, Biden recently invoked his executive power to prohibit political asylum to a large portion of illegal immigrants at the US border.
