Axios Report… “Agreement with Qatar and Egypt”
Axios reported on the 17th (local time) that U.S. President Joe Biden is aiming to conclude a ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip by the end of next week to prevent heightened tensions in the Middle East.
Axios reported this, citing U.S. officials. According to the media, President Biden told reporters the day before, “I’m optimistic. We’re not done yet. There are just a few issues left, and I think we have a chance.”
In particular, President Biden spoke on the same day with the Emir of Qatar and the President of Egypt, two mediating countries. The three leaders “all agreed that this process is now in its final stages,” a senior U.S. official said.
Israeli negotiators have also been given more leeway from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu than before, U.S. officials said.
The official acknowledged that the deal was not perfect, but described it as the best deal currently available that would free the hostages, provide aid to Gaza residents and reduce the risk of war.
But a senior Israeli official said most of the progress in negotiations had been made between Israel, the United States, Qatar and Egypt, and it was unclear whether the Palestinian armed group Hamas would agree.
Israeli officials said Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar had not yet received the full deal and had not responded.
In fact, Sami Abu Zuhri, a member of the Hamas Political Bureau, issued a statement on the 17th criticizing the statement, saying, “It is an illusion to say that we are getting close to an agreement.”
Earlier, the Gaza ceasefire negotiations proposed by the US, Egypt, and Qatar ended without an agreement. Hamas did not send a delegation to the negotiations, and no agreement was reached.
However, according to the Times of Israel (TOI), related talks are scheduled for the weekend of the 18th and next week on the 21st and 22nd. The US hopes to conclude the ceasefire negotiations it led during this period.
