“A mean and dark incident”… A condolence message to a grieving Germany
U.S. President Joe Biden mourned the victims of the German Christmas market car crash, calling it a “despicable and dark incident.”
President Biden said in a statement on the 21st (local time), “No community or family should have to experience such a despicable and dark incident just days before the holiday of joy and peace (Christmas).”
“Our team has been in close contact with German officials,” he said. “We have made it clear that the United States stands ready to provide all available resources and support if necessary.”
At the same time, President Biden said, “The investigation is ongoing, but I will make one thing clear. “The United States will always stand with its allies against violent terrorism,” he added.
Earlier, at around 7 p.m. on the 20th (local time), a car crashed into the Christmas market in Magdeburg, the capital of Saxony-Anhalt, Germany.
At least five people died and more than 200 were injured in this incident. 41 of the injured are in critical condition. Magdeburg officials said a 9-year-old child was among the dead.
The suspect, Taleb A, who drove an SUV (sports utility vehicle) and rushed into the crowd, is known to be a 50-year-old Saudi man who has been living legally in Germany since 2006. He is said to have helped women persecuted by Saudi authorities seek asylum.
German Interior Minister Nancy Feser said the suspect was identified as an Islamophobe.
