US President Joe Biden yesterday (Sunday) assured Ukrainian President Vladimir Zlansky that his country would defend against the Russians in case they decide to invade Ukraine.
“We will respond with decisions on whether Russia will invade Ukraine,” Biden told Zlansky.
The two spoke on the phone, a few days after in a conversation with Russian President Putin, Biden demanded to calm tensions on the border. Later this month, Russian and American teams are due to meet in Geneva to discuss attempts to bring an end to the escalation.
In recent months, the United States and Western countries have feared a possible Russian invasion of Ukraine, with 100,000 Russian troops on the border, despite warnings from Biden and his colleagues that any attack would have serious consequences for the Putin regime.
Earlier this month, Moscow filed a security memorandum demanding that NATO not allow Ukraine and other countries that were once in the Soviet bloc to join the organization. Russia also demands the withdrawal of Western forces in Eastern and Central Europe. .
Washington and its allies refused to comply with the guarantees the Russians demanded, but said they were willing to open talks.
