As President Joe Biden accepted the three-month interim budget (CR) processed by the U.S. Congress, concerns about a U.S. federal government shutdown were alleviated, at least temporarily.

The White House announced that President Biden signed the three-month interim budget (CR) processed by Congress on the 26th (local time).

The U.S. House of Representatives passed the temporary budget bill the day before with 341 votes in favor and 82 votes against, and the Senate also passed the bill soon after with 78 votes in favor and 18 against.

With President Biden’s signature, application of the temporary budget from next month to December 20th has been confirmed. The U.S. Congress plans to begin discussing next year’s budget in earnest after the elections in November of this year.

In the United States, the next year’s federal fiscal year budget takes effect from October of that year. Therefore, Congress must process the budget by September, but difficulties in reaching an agreement have been raised this year, raising concerns about a shutdown.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) initially presented a six-month interim budget plan tied to legislation strengthening the voter registration process for elections. However, the Democratic Party objected not only to linking the bill but also to the six-month period.

In the end, the bill failed to pass the House of Representatives threshold and was scrapped. As the shutdown crisis escalated, Chairman Johnson eventually presented a three-month interim budget after negotiations with the Democratic Party.

This budget also includes support of $230 million (approximately 306.5 billion won) to the Secret Service. A bill aimed at providing the same level of security to former President Donald Trump, the Republican presidential candidate who survived two assassination crises, passed Congress on the 24th.
