US President Joe Biden and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin will speak by telephone today, for the second time this month, following the December 7 video call.

The two leaders will ostensibly try to bring about a reduction in escalation between the parties, especially in light of the fear of a Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Russia has placed many forces on the border with Ukraine in recent months, but denies that it intends to invade the country.

The US consulted with its European allies before the call with a view to reaching an agreement on the appropriate response.

In the United States it is reported that President Biden will offer Putin the path to diplomacy, but he is still very concerned about the accumulation of Russian forces.

Biden is expected to make it clear to Putin: If you move towards an invasion of Ukraine, we will not hesitate to respond.
