Plans to Focus on Running the Government in the White House During the Half-Year Term
It seems likely that only limited campaigning will be conducted, targeting specific competitive states and voters.
U.S. President Joe Biden, who has given up on seeking re-election, is reportedly planning to scale back his schedule during the remaining half year of his term and occasionally campaign in support of Vice President Kamala Harris.
On the 8th (local time), Politico reported, citing anonymous Democratic Party officials, that President Biden had received a private suggestion within the party that it would be better for him to stay in the White House and focus on running the country rather than campaigning nationwide.
“Biden has reminded voters of his compassion and his unwavering leadership,” said one Democratic strategist who asked to remain anonymous, referring to the prisoner swap with Russia. “Exerting more force and less campaigning is probably the best he can do.”
“The party did not want Biden as the nominee,” said another anonymous source who worked on the Democratic presidential campaign. “It would be very difficult for the Harris team to hope to send Biden out on the campaign trail.”
President Biden is scheduled to speak on the first day of the Democratic National Convention on the 19th. According to sources, Biden is expected to hold his first joint campaign with Harris in the coming weeks.
The strategy is to attack swing states that are friendly to her, such as Pennsylvania, but avoid national campaigns to focus attention on Harris.
He is also expected to focus on promoting his legacy by highlighting major achievements, such as the bipartisan infrastructure bill and easing prescription drug burdens, through official White House events.
White House Chief of Staff Jeff Giants spoke to about 2,000 senior administration officials on the 7th, and National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan discussed the possibility of President Biden increasing his domestic and international activities now that he is no longer a candidate, sources said.
It has also been reported that he will drastically reduce the frequency of his speeches to only those related to major policy issues and will promote his achievements through media interviews.
“President Biden is focused on delivering for the American people while also building support for Harris and Walz,” said TJ Ducklo, who is serving as Biden’s personal spokesman. “I look forward to joining them on the campaign trail soon to talk about their vision for the future.”
