Biennale of short film Vicenza, Dal Molin: “I dedicate a focus to women”

by time news

The Biennale del Corto di Vicenza, reaches its third edition and opens the new film season, after the devastating epidemic from Covid 19. Scheduled from 18 to 26 September at the Astra Theater, it will present 300 works from all over the world divided into different sections, many events, and guests of rank who will give prestige to this courageous event conceived and directed with passion and stubbornness by Luca Dal Molin.

It begins on September 18 with the opening night in the presence of Daniele Ciprì, brilliant director, who with Franco Maresco in the 90s gave life to Cinico TV, a cult broadcast of mini sketches that can still be seen on Blob. The Astra theater, as the venue for all projections, will be a stage for meetings and awards.

Marco and Antonio Manetti will also arrive in Vicenza, brilliant directors, screenwriters and cinematographers who from independent filmmakers have made a name for themselves internationally with their films halfway between comedy and musical (Song’e Napule, Ammore and Malavita) and for the next long-awaited “Diabolik” which will be released next December. But the Biennale del Corto di Vicenza is not just cinema. To find out more Affari interviewed Luca Dal Molin, entrepreneur and cultural operator who has access to the light of cinema in the city of Palladio.

What are the news of this third edition?

This year La Biennale will maintain its vocation for shorts: over 300 short films divided into sections will be presented. We will pay homage to two Italian festivals (Mantova Lovers and Video Essay Festival in Rome), and we will dedicate a focus to Poland with 10 shorts from the Krakow film center and a tribute to Agnes Varda’s shorts. Many will be the excellent guests, well-known faces of the Italian cinema scene: the Manetti Bros., Umberto Contarello (who will be awarded a prize for the screenplay), Lorenza Indovina, Michela Andreozzi, the brothers Gianluca and Massimiliano De Serio and the musician Danilo Rea (which will be awarded a prize for music). The novelty of this year is a focus, a special entirely dedicated to directors and actresses curated by Barbara Taricone of Sky. Furthermore, a great event for the city of Vicenza will be the exhibition created by the Swedish duo Nathalie Djumberg and Hans Berg, who will exhibit in the Sala degli Zavatteri in the Basilica Palladiana. These are particular installations that express the best of their mixture of art and music. She is a great contemporary artist, he is a well-known musician in the fields of electronics and experimentation.

The “gem” of this edition is the preview of the teaser of “Gotico Padano”, a tribute to a famous film by Pupi Avati. How did you find out?

The inauguration of the biennial will be entrusted to the preview of the long trailer-teaser of the film “Gotico Padano – in the footsteps of Buono Legnani the painter of agonies”, created by two Vicenza directors Roberto Leggio and Gabriele Grotto, a tribute to atmospheres and mysteries of the famous cult film The House with Laughing Windows by Pupi Avati. The directors introduced me to this interesting project and I took the opportunity to pay tribute to the master Pupi Avati with a project that concerns a film that, even today, fascinates the younger generations. The biennial will certainly be an excellent space and showcase for the film still in progress. The very gripping teaser takes you back through the years.

What was it like organizing a film festival in time for Covid?

It was a long and difficult period, at times even very uncertain and full of insecurities, today things seem fortunately a little better, even if the management of the pandemic is full of contradictions and with bad communication. There have been many difficulties in setting up this biennial even if we have reached the starting blocks.

Why did you choose Vicenza as the city of choice for this festival?

Vicenza is a beautiful city rich in art, with an attentive and sensitive audience. Hence the idea of making a constant project over the years and of exponential growth. I am from Veneto and I am very attached to this region even though I have had many experiences in many other cities. I also like challenges: here I have already done three editions in the future you never know …..

In Italy, short films have no market. Does it make sense to focus on this formula?

Yes, unfortunately, in Italy there is no short film market like in the rest of Europe; they lack the mindset, the approach, the visibility, and the knowledge. For this it is necessary to raise awareness among the public and the media. However, this operation must also be carried out by institutions, promoting initiatives like these, supporting them and above all trying to understand them. Cinema is a very important heritage for humanity.

The third edition consecrates the success of this festival… ..What is its secret?

Success is the ability to reinvent oneself to make the short film and its directors known in all its facets, knowing how to take risks with a curious and engaging programming. It is a big applause to the people who collaborate with me. It is also a great credit to our partners, because without them the biennial would not exist.

Also this year illustrious guests will arrive in the city of Palladio …

Yes, many famous names from the entertainment world have joined my invitation. also this year illustrious guests: the Manetti Bros., Umberto Contarello (who will be awarded a prize for the screenplay), Lorenza Indovina, Michela Andreozzi, the brothers Gianluca and Massimiliano De Serio and the musician Danilo Rea (who will be awarded a prize for music). The Manetti Bros will tell their stories in a meeting with the film critic Mario Sesti on Saturday 25 September not to be missed,
For Daniele Cipri it is a return to the biennial he had already come in the first edition, he will be present at the inauguration with some surprises that I do not want to anticipate.

The “gem” of this edition is the preview of the teaser of “Gotico Padano”, a tribute to a famous film by Pupi Avati. How did you find out?

Two good Venetian directors, Roberto Leggio and Gabriele Grotto introduced me to this interesting project and I took the opportunity to pay tribute to the master Pupi Avati in this cult film “The house with laughing windows”, a film that, still today it fascinates the new generations. The biennial will certainly be an excellent space and showcase for the film still in progress. The very gripping teaser takes you back through the years.

Is it also a tribute to Venetian directors?

It is always important to value the authors, whether they are from Veneto or Sicily, and to believe in their work, to stimulate and encourage them, reviews like these are important for visibility, knowledge, and the importance of a work done in the territory to which they belong. For Roberto Leggio this is his second work after the award-winning “Road to L. – The mystery of Lovecraft”.

What do you expect from this edition?

I think it is a great achievement to have reached the 3rd edition! Now we just have to have fun and entertain Vicenza with this third edition of the biennial of the short film. Long live the cinema!
