The U.S. Geological Survey has warned of a possible tsunami following a major earthquake. However, the US Geological Survey said there were no immediate reports of injuries or severe damage.

Earthquakes and tsunamis are becoming more widespread in Indonesia due to their location in the Pacific Ring of Fire. A previous earthquake in 2004 killed at least 200,000 people when a magnitude 9.1 earthquake shook the region of Sumatra in Indonesia.

In 2018, an earthquake on the island of Lombok killed 550 people. A magnitude 7.5 earthquake and tsunami have killed at least 4,300 people on the island of Sulawesi last year.
