After a historic 24-season partnership, Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots are expected to part ways, according to sources familiar with the situation. The decision comes after extensive discussions between Belichick and Patriots owner Robert Kraft, which resulted in a mutual agreement to part ways.

Belichick, who led the Patriots to six Super Bowl titles, will be allowed to leave the team without the Patriots seeking compensation. The legendary coach is expected to draw interest from several NFL teams looking to fill head-coaching vacancies, with the Atlanta Falcons as a possible landing spot, according to league sources.

Following Belichick’s departure, the Patriots will embark on their first head-coaching search in a quarter-century. Patriots linebackers coach Jerod Mayo, whom Kraft has identified as a rising head-coaching candidate, is expected to be a leading candidate for the job, sources said.

Belichick’s exit from New England comes after a disappointing season for the Patriots, which saw them eliminated from the playoffs early. Speculation about Belichick’s future had been swirling throughout the season, with one of the lowest points being a 10-6 loss to the Indianapolis Colts in Germany. Kraft had expressed disappointment in the franchise’s trajectory since the departure of quarterback Tom Brady after the 2019 season, as the team has posted losing records in three of the last four seasons.

Belichick leaves New England with an impressive legacy, including 333 career victories, making him second all-time behind Don Shula. He is also known for his 17 division titles, nine conference championships, and 12 Super Bowl appearances.

The Patriots are expected to hold a news conference Thursday to mark the end of an era in Patriots and football history.
