After this pandemic, there will eventually come the next: A conversation about important lessons and why we need a new task force to protect ourselves from pandemics in the future.

Mr. Gates, you wrote a book about how we can prevent the next pandemic. But let’s start with the pandemic we’re in right now, although many people are acting like it’s over.

I can’t imagine anyone seriously claiming that the pandemic is over. After all, experts say that in countries where a very high proportion of older people are vaccinated or recovered, a situation where a lockdown is necessary will not arise again. Unless a new variant surprises us. And a lot is uncertain at the moment: will there be variants that escape the immune system and therefore cause numerous infections among those who have been vaccinated and those who have recovered? Could there be a variant that can bypass immune protection in such a way that it also leads to more serious illness and death again? That would be the worst scenario.
