Revealed yesterday by the French newspaper Le Monde, President Andry Rajoelina, elected to the supreme office in 2018, did indeed acquire French nationality, by naturalization in 2014. News that shook the national political microcosm a few months before the next presidential election.

Some opposition parties, including the Malagasy Miara-Miainga (MMM) of Haja Andrianainarivelo, quickly seized on the affair. In a press release published today, the MMM asks Andry Rajoelina to speak on the subject.

“Faced with the dissemination of several official documents claiming the French nationality of the current President of the Republic of Madagascar, the MMM asks Mr. Andry Rajoelina to speak on this subject which offends the sovereignty of the Malagasy people who have been betrayed. ” declares the MMM in its press release.

The functions of a president of the republic can only fall to a citizen of Malagasy nationality, as is clearly specified by article 46 of the Constitution. Madagascar having been colonized and having regained its independence in 1960, not allowing a person of foreign nationality to take charge of the destinies of the country, would be the first measure which is essential, tackles the MMM.

For his part, Siteny Randrianasoloniako, future presidential candidate, skirted the subject by just mentioning that he decided not to apply for another nationality even if he had the possibility thanks to his marriage.

For the moment, the reaction of the pro-powers is long overdue. The director of the president’s cabinet, Romy Voos Andrianarisoa, traveling with Andry Rajoelina to the ILO Summit in Geneva, was approached by the newspaper Le Monde and had to confirm the president’s dual nationality, while qualifying the disclosure of this information.

Politicians close to power who are used to extending on social networks to defend the president or his actions do not pipent a word for the moment on this affair. Lalatiana Rakotondrazafy questioned on the subject during a cultural event at Canal Olympia in Andohatapenaka swept aside the question and spoke of false debate, nothing more.

The publication of the naturalization decree signed by Manuel-Valls in 2014 forced the head of state to recognize a dual nationality that he had always sought to conceal, reports the newspaper Le Monde. A binationality also mentioned by the Gazette de la Grande-île newspaper in its edition of March 3, 2023.
