This year has started with changes in waste sorting, because from January 1, sorting of biodegradable or bio-waste is mandatory for all households in Latvia. This means that there should also be a brown container in the yard. Owners of private houses mostly apply their own containers, moreover, they often also create compost on their property, but what should residents of apartment buildings do?

Sorting will be cheaper

Although it was possible to separate bio-waste already from 2021, it became mandatory for households to do so only this year, and with the changes in the Waste Management Law, the removal of this waste became 40% cheaper.

“Our experience shows that biomass makes up approximately 30% to 50% of the volume of household waste. Thus, by separating bio-waste from household waste, its volume will decrease and the waste can either be removed less often or a smaller container can be installed, thus also reducing waste management bills ,” explains the company CleanR chairman of the board Valerijs Stankevičs.

He adds that by actively sorting, residents can reduce their bills by as much as 30%, as bio-waste management is cheaper, while the disposal of glass, metal, plastic and paper packaging is provided free of charge. Textiles can also be handed over free of charge.
