Susana Muhamad, Minister of the Environment, during her speech at the opening of Climate Week in New York, pointed out the urgent need to include biodiversity and nature restoration as fundamental pillars in the climate transition. To do so, she said, a financial system and markets must be created that adapt to the cycles of natural systems.

“In order to stabilise the climate, we will have to make a huge economic transition, which is not at the centre of the climate conversation today. We talk a lot about emissions, but we don’t talk about how we are going to stop the expansion of fossil fuel production. And we don’t talk about that, because the centre is actually the economic system,” said Muhamad.

In fact, the minister addressed the challenges facing Colombia, a country dependent on coal and oil exports, in its efforts to limit fossil fuel exploration. She stressed the need to promote the non-proliferation treaty of fossil fuels and a framework that facilitates the transition towards sustainable economies.

“Without significant change in our economy and the rules of the game, we will continue to make empty promises. It is imperative that we talk about how to stop the expansion of fossil fuel production,” he added.

He also highlighted that 20% of global emissions are attributable to deforestation and land use change, which demonstrates the importance of alliances with nature to stabilise the climate.

“If we comply with the Kunming-Montreal agreement on biodiversity, we could contribute 30% to the goal of keeping the temperature increase below two degrees Celsius,” said Muhamad.

Finally, the Colombian minister invited the international community to participate in the upcoming COP16 on biodiversity in Cali, from October 21 to November 1, where a constructive dialogue is expected to address these crucial challenges.
