Tiger mosquitoes usually breed in settlement areas in the smallest accumulations of water such as water barrels, buckets, watering cans, flower pots, coasters, umbrella stands, gullies, clogged gutters or car tires. The eggs survive drought and cold winters. Busy garden ponds and pools are not breeding grounds. Tiger mosquitoes cannot develop in watering holes for birds and hedgehogs if the water is changed every five days. The first larvae can be found as early as April, and they are particularly numerous in midsummer if there is insufficient control.

The Asian tiger mosquito is black and white in color and between four and nine millimeters in size. The typical five white stripes on the hind legs are particularly striking. The end of the hind legs is colored white. A white longitudinal stripe can be seen on the back of the front body.
