Bird flu – GGD Zeeland

by time news

Dead birds also recently washed up on the beaches of Walcheren and now bird flu has been diagnosed at a laying poultry farm in the municipality of Kapelle. It is a highly pathogenic variant. To prevent the spread of the virus, the company is being culled.

You can find a lot of information about bird flu on the RIVM website. You will also find reliable information at the NVWA.

Bird flu occurs all over the world. Many waterfowl carry flu viruses, but do not themselves become ill. Contact between wild waterfowl and poultry is considered to be a cause of bird flu outbreaks among poultry.

What can you do?

– Do not touch sick or dead wild (water) birds;
– As a precaution, keep your dog on a lead in places where dead waterfowl may lie. This way you prevent your dog from coming into contact with infected birds;
– Report your find (one or more dead wild birds at 1 location) via the NVWA.

What does the GGD do?

In the event of bird flu on a farm, the GGD provides antiviral medication to those involved to prevent them from becoming ill from bird flu. In addition, we monitor the data subjects for a period of 10 days.
