London/Birmingham – Birmingham, one of the most insolvent county councils in the UK, has now seen a 21% increase in council tax. The 21% increase has left people struggling to find the £300m they need for daily expenses. Birmingham residents will pay 10 per cent in council tax this April and 21 per cent next April.

Tax hikes were accompanied by massive cuts in services. Leader John Cotton apologized to city residents for the new reforms during his full budget presentation on Tuesday. In September, the council said it could not meet its financial obligations. Such an announcement was made due to a budget deficit of £87 million. He then issued a Section 114 notice and subsequently declared himself bankrupt. Cuts to services have ranged from reducing garbage collection to replacing bright street lights with dimmer ones.

Council decisions include the possibility of 600 council job cuts, children’s school transport, a review of arts funds, the sale of community centres, reduced fly-tipping enforcement and increased parking fees at county parks. Around 200 protesters protested against the proposals outside the council house during the budget session.
