Birthday of the outstanding representative of Azerbaijani art of painting Togrul Narimanbekov

Having entered the world of creativity in the 50s of the last century, Togrul Narimanbekov, in his youth, thanks to his natural talent, gained wide fame, became famous in the country and abroad. An outstanding artist, who possessed high professionalism, successfully working in all genres of fine art, carried out fruitful activities for many years.

Day.Az reports with reference to AZERTAC that it is 94 years since the birth of the People’s Artist of the USSR and Azerbaijan Togrul Narimanbekov.

The future artist was born on August 7, 1930 in Baku. He first studied at the Azim Azimzade Azerbaijan Art School, and then from 1950 to 1955 at the Lithuanian Art Institute in Vilnius.

Since 1952 T.Narimanbekov has been a participant in art exhibitions. In 1961, 1965 and 1975 personal exhibitions were held in Baku, in 1965 – in Prague, in 1967 and 1972 – in Moscow, in 1972 – in Vilnius, in 1973 – in Volgograd, Wroclaw, Warsaw and Sopot, in 1975 – in Lvov.

The works of the master of the brush are decorative and festive, built on a tense color rhythm that goes back to the national traditions of Azerbaijani art. T. Narimanbekov considered it necessary for art, in particular painting, to return to the origins of national culture. He described his work as a combination of abstract and figurative art.

T. Narimanbekov is the author of genre compositions (“Dawn over the Caspian”, 1957, Azerbaijan Museum of Art, Baku; “At the Field Camp”, 1967, Tretyakov Gallery; “Before the Holiday”, 1971), landscapes (“Baku”, 1964, Azerbaijan Museum of Art, Baku), portraits (S. Bahlulzade, 1959) and still lifes (“Pomegranates and Pears”, 1961, Museum of Oriental Art, Moscow), paintings (in the buildings of the Azerbaijan Puppet Theater named after A. Shaig, 1975, 1978).

The master of the brush also worked on theatrical scenery. In 1968, he designed the ballet “Shadows of Gobustan” by Faraj Karayev (Opera and Ballet Theater, Baku). In 1974, for the design of the choreographic poem “The Tale of Nasimi” at the Azerbaijan Opera and Ballet Theater, the artist was awarded the State Prize of the Azerbaijan SSR. And in 1980, for the design of the ballet “1001 Nights” by Fikret Amirov, he was awarded the State Prize of the USSR.

In addition to his artistic activities, T. Narimanbekov is known for having a beautiful voice and performing various arias of Azerbaijani and foreign composers in his youth. Since the end of 1980, the artist’s wife Sevil has regularly worked with him in organizing his concerts. S. Narimanbekov was also the director of her husband’s art exhibitions. In early 1998, T. Narimanbekov gave a solo concert accompanied by the Azerbaijan State Symphony Orchestra, as well as an exhibition of his new works at the Opera and Ballet Theater.

On August 5, 2000, by the Decree of the President of Azerbaijan Heydar Aliyev, the artist was awarded the Istiglal Order for his great services in the development of Azerbaijani culture, and on August 9, 2010, by the Decree of President Ilham Aliyev, he was awarded the Sharaf Order.

Since 2001, according to the contract concluded with Parisian galleries, T. Narimanbekov had to work in Paris for 6 months a year, where he died on June 2, 2013.
