A fire broke out in Bischofszell TG on Monday afternoon. As seen in several pictures and videos from news scouts, thick black smoke billowed across the city. According to an eye witness, the fire department was on the scene with a large contingent. Thurgau cantonal police confirmed a corresponding operation.

“There is a fire in a residential and commercial building,” says Daniel Meili, spokesman for the Thurgau cantonal police when asked. There is an auto repair shop on the ground floor of the building. “There are currently no reports of people missing or injured.” It is not clear what caused the fire at this time. “First the fire has to be put out, then the fire investigation begins,” Meili continued. The Bischofszell and Amriswil fire departments were on duty. The fire was brought under control shortly after 6 pm and an excavator began the clean-up work.

The new fire was probably caused by a nest of wasps in the attic. (July 8, 2024)

But around 9 pm it broke out again, as BRK News reports. The emergency services noticed a new development of smoke in the upper part of the building – apparently from an ash nest in the attic. Those firefighters who were still on the scene began to extinguish the fire.

This is what Daniel Meili, media spokesman for the Thurgau cantonal police, says about the fire in Bischofszell.

After the fire broke out in the afternoon, the fire departments of Bischofszell, Amriswil, Wil and Gossau arrived with about 70 emergency services and were able to prevent the fire from spreading to other buildings. According to the Thurgau cantonal police, the property damage is in the seven-figure range. The city of Bischofszell has organized accommodation for the residents of the fire.

Traffic redirected

TCS said the main road between Kreuzlingen and Herisau is closed in both directions due to fire. Traffic was diverted for several hours.

“I’ll always see little explosions”

As a resident said at 20 Minutes, shortly after two o’clock the fire was still not extinguished. “You’ll always see smaller explosions,” says the 27-year-old. According to her, the fire raged in a residential building where there is also a carpet shop.

“Come down I was on the balcony, but now the wind changed and I had to go inside,” said the resident. Several fire brigades are on duty, “there are also emergency forces from neighboring regions such as Frauenfeld and Amriswil.” The sky was “completely black.”

“At first I thought someone was grinding”

Rafael (24) lives right next to the fire. «I was on the balcony with a colleague. Shortly before 2 pm there was some smoke – we thought someone was grilling.” But then it smoked more and more heavily. “So we packed our things and went out.” Rafael couldn’t go back to his apartment yet. “I’m afraid the apartment will be full of smoke. The window is probably still open.”

Flames and clinging windows

“The windows of the burning house were blown out and there was a huge flame,” says Tim (22) on the scene at 20 Minutes. A resident (68) said she had never seen so much smoke in Bischofszell. “I didn’t expect the smell of smoke to be so bad. You are more likely to see something like this in big cities with big companies.” The woman says her eyes are very itchy.

According to residents, the building housed, among other things, an auto repair shop. It is not clear whether the heavy smoke came from burning tires. A man wanted to bring his car in for service. “I can forget about that now.”
