Toronto: Pope Francis has appointed Bishop Frank Leo as the new president of Toronto, Canada’s largest Catholic diocese. The appointment of the new archbishop comes after the resignation of Cardinal Thomas Collins, who has completed 75 years of age, as the archbishop of Toronto.

Archbishop-elect Leo, who speaks English, French, Italian and Spanish, will be officially installed as the 14th Archbishop of Toronto in a ceremony at St. Michael’s Cathedral Basilica. Details of the ceremony will be confirmed in the coming days, the Diocese said in a press release.

‘I humbly accept this appointment from the Holy Father to serve the faithful of the Archdiocese of Toronto. I thank Pope Francis for his faith in me. “Thank you to Cardinal Thomas Collins for his support and for his many years of faithful and inspiring service to the Church,” Bishop Leo said in a statement.

Cardinal Collins said he offers his prayers, best wishes and full support to Archbishop-elect Leo as he prepares to serve the clergy of the Archdiocese of Toronto. “His knowledge of the worldwide Church and his commitment to serving others with joy and faithfulness are remarkable,” added Cardinal Collins.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford thanked Cardinal Collins for his service in a tweet and wished him well. “Thank you, Cardinal Collins, your service has been a wonderful example to many in our province,” said Doug Ford.

Archbishop-elect Frank Leo was born on June 30, 1971 in Montreal, Canada. He was ordained a priest on 14 December 1996. He was appointed Monsignor in January 2012. In July last year, Pope Francis appointed Bishop Leo as Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Montreal.

The Archdiocese of Toronto consists of 225 parishes and approximately two million Catholics, approximately 400 priests, from Toronto to Georgian Bay and from Oshawa to Mississauga.
